“One dollar and eighty-seven cents. And he next day would be Christmas.”
O. Henry is at his best in this collection of three winter tales. Includes his immortal Christmas parable “The Gift of the Magi,” the darkly comic “The Cop and the Anthem,” and “The Last Leaf” a bittersweet tale of impoverished artists in New York City. Illustrator Kate Bingaman-Burt’s charming drawings perfectly reflect the ironic wit and affection of O. Henry’s words.
O. Henry was the pen name of the prolific short story writer William Sydney Porter (1862-1910). O. Henry wrote hundreds of stories (including several written while serving a term in federal prison for embezzlement) during his career and was well-known for his warmly comic depictions of everyday life, often punctuated by ironic surprise endings.
Kate Bingaman-Burt lives in Portland, Oregon, where, along with being an Assistant Professor of Graphic Design at Portland State University, she also makes piles of work about the stories our objects tell: zines! pillows! dresses!drawings! photos! installations! She is an educator and illustrator and sometimes a curator, author, speaker and workshop giver. Her affinity for wearing multiple hats is almost as strong as her affinity for mac & cheese.
