“To die of hanging at the bottom of a river!”
Ambrose Bierce’s dark tales of everyday life (and death) during the Civil War are true American classics. The story the ill-fated saboteur Peyton Farquhar, “An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge” is still as gripping, suspenseful, and morbidly beautiful as ever. This Good Ink edition, newly illustrated by cartoonist François Vigneault, also includes “A Horseman in the Sky,” a tale of a Virginian soldier’s divided loyalties.
Ambrose Bierce (1842-1913) was a famed editor, journalist, satirist, and short story writer. His short stories, often featuring twist endings, are both widely-read and highly influential, and his famous The Devil’s Dictionary is considered a classic of sardonic wit. While reporting on the revolution in Mexico in 1913 he disappeared and was never seen again.
François Vigneault (b. 1978) is a cartoonist, small-press publisher, and student. He is the editor of ELFWORLD, an anthology of indy-fantasy comics, and the creator of the illustrated nature-journal series Bird Brain. He has recently relocated from San Francisco to Portland, Oregon, where he lives in a big, crazy house with his girlfriend Hannah and two cats.
