“That flagon last night,” thought he, “has addled my poor head sadly!”
“Rip Van Winkle,” the quintessential American fable, is at turns a homespun fantasy and a witty and affectionate comedy of shifting cultural norms. Washington Irving’s immortal tale is perfectly complimented by Bwana Spoons’ delightful drawings of Rip and the other denizens of the sleepy Kaatskill Mountains.
Washington Irving (1783-1859) was one of the first American literary successes. Best known for his classic tales of life in colonial America, Irving was also a prolific historian, biographer, and essayist. Irving attributed many of his stories, including “Rip Van Winkle” and “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” to the fictional Dutch historian Diedrich Knickerbocker, a name that has been associated with New York to this day, including the New York “Knicks.”
Bwana Spoons (b. 1970) is a Portland-based painter and a half-jack of many other trades: He makes toys, designs shoes, and creates other works of art for the likes of Gargamel, Nike, Hurley, Converse, Top Shelf, and many more. He is also the curator and owner of Grass Hut, a gallery and toy shop in Portland, Oregon. He hearts trees, moss, and monsters.
