“Free! Body and soul free!”
In these four stories, Kate Chopin subtly captures the intricate interior lives of a generation of women. From the famous proto-feminist tale “The Story of an Hour” to the subtly sexy “A Respectable Woman,” Chopin sheds light on the frustrations, desires, and dreams of her own era and their reverberations today. Artist Gemma Correll’s quirky illustrations provide a perfect modern counterpoint to Chopin’s classic prose.
Kate Chopin (1850-1904) was a prolific short story writer and novelist. After a successful literary career with stories published in Vogue, The Atlantic Monthly, and Century, Chopin’s reputation came under fire following the publication of her novel The Awakening in 1899, which scandalized readers of the time. However, by the 1970s The Awakening was embraced as a proto-feminist masterpiece, and Chopin is now regarded as one of the finest writers of her generation.
Gemma Correll has bad eyesight. Thanks to the wonders of spectacle technology, however, she manages to hold down a full-time job as a freelance illustrator and bumps into things only occasionally. Her clients include Hermés, Hallmark and Real Simple magazine. Gemma lives in England with her fiancé, Anthony (also an illustrator) and a small, squishy Pug named Mr Pickles.
