The quintessential tale of Man versus Nature, “To Build a Fire” is the story of a hapless prospector’s struggle for warmth and life in the midst of the Yukon Territory. Jack London’s clipped, naturalist prose brings the beauty and terror of the frozen North to startling life, and artist Michael Hsiung’s meticulously rendered illustrations inject new energy into this classic tale.
Jack London (1876-1916) was a famed writer, journalist, and social activist. Born John Chaney in San Francisco, London worked as a sailor in the Pacific and gold prospector in the Klondike Gold Rush before beginning his career as a writer. His novels and short stories (including The Call of the Wild, White Fang, and The Sea Wolf) brought him wide-spread acclaim and success, and he was a well-known Socialist and progressive reformer.
Michael C. Hsiung is known for his humorous and strange black-and-white drawings of obese men and bears and fantastical mermen and centaurs. He has done artwork for Dr. Martens, Enjoi Skateboards, Matix, Ambiguous, and Momentum Wheels. He currently lives in Los Angeles, CA where he continues to draw, sell prints, and play Dungeons & Dragons, blog for the Vans art tumblr, and is part of the Human Pyramids Artists Collective.
