“There are things in that paper that nobody knows but me, or ever will.”
One of the great early feminist texts, “The Yellow Wallpaper” is also one of the most chilling and shocking stories you will ever read. Based partially on Charlotte Perkins Gillman’s own experiences, this tale a woman’s medical confinement dives into the depths of psychological terror. Aaron Renier’s lush illustrations bring “The Yellow Wallpaper” to terrifying life.
Charlotte Perkins Gilman (1860-1935) was a prolific essayist, poet, short story writer, novelist, and lecturer. An ardent feminist, she worked throughout her life for women’s suffrage and progressive social reform. In addition to her famous short story “The Yellow Wallpaper,” her works include Herland and The Home: Its Work and Influence. Diagnosed with incurable breast cancer, Gilman committed suicide in 1935.
