Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) was an important figure in the American literary community throughout his life. Born in Salem, Massachusetts of Puritan stock, Hawthorne’s novels and short stories often addressed human nature, sin, and evil. His novel The Scarlet Letter remains one of the most widely-read works of 19th century American literature.
