“What if the devil himself should be at my very elbow!”
In this haunting tale of the Devil and witchcraft in the New England woods, Nathaniel Hawthorne explores the hidden darkness that awaits the unwary traveler on the flip side of society, civilization, and faith. Cartoonist Zack Soto’s illustrations bring out all the frenetic mystery and horror of Hawthorne’s rich and engrossing text.
Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804–1864) was an important figure in the American literary community throughout his life. Born in Salem, Massachusetts of Puritan stock, Hawthorne’s novels and short stories often addressed human nature, sin, and evil. His novel The Scarlet Letter remains one of the most widely-read works of 19th century American literature.
